The 8 hour vanadium redox flow battery in combination with solar power decarbonizes food processing at animal farms making the food sector more sustainable.
Wiener Neudorf, Austria, November 15, 2021 – Enerox GmbH – recognized under its global brand CellCube – is very much known for their long lasting, reliable and recyclable long-duration energy storage systems and has been one of the first providers of storage systems to remote farms and small commercial clients in the last 10 years in countries like Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Australia or even Thailand. Those systems have been typically between 4-10 hours and were comparably small in the range of 80 to 130 kWh, mainly shifting solar energy from day to night-time. Nowadays the local food production and processing becomes more and more important because it reduces CO2 related to transportation and allows for controlling environmental aspects more thoroughly. This is valid for all kinds of agricultural applications and is even valid for fishing. As overfishing of our seas has drastically reduced fish stocks aquafarms are gaining importance.
In the Austrian state of Styria, KIA-AquaFARM is building a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) that sets new standards regarding sustainability. For breeding fish, shellfish, and snails, the farm relies on onsite oxygen production and a bio water management plant which also transfers the residues into an environmentally friendly fertilizer.
In such a holistic approach a sustainable power system with energy storage cannot be missing. At least partly, power is often generated onsite with solar arrays. Typically, there is a need for peak-shaving of maximum loads and also for storing energy over longer time periods – especially solar energy that is generated during daytime and also partly used during nighttime. Sometimes the energy is stored even over longer time periods to bridge bad weather days.
For this kind of long-duration multi-use-case and off-grid storage applications there is no economic alternative to flow-batteries. So, it is no surprise that the AquaFARM has opted for a 750kW/6MWh solution from the market leader Enerox. Three CellCube FB 250-2000 vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) will be at the heart of the Microgrid system that ensures an economic and secure power supply and will be capable to operate in offgrid mode too.
